Vocalist Gurdeep Stephens was born in Vancouver Canada with British and Indian roots. Living in Brixton London, she now explores the boundaries of the voice within Jazz. Gurdeep has performed and recorded several styles of music including cabaret, free improvisation, early music, contemporary classical, and folk. Having lived in several different countries with diverse influences, Gurdeep has developed a unique style, which hinges on her versatile sweet voice, impressive range and classical training. |
After mind-expanding studies at the Bloom School of Jazz in Chicago in 2001, Gurdeep returned to London to form α-lpha blue , a new jazz quartet with pianist Jonathan Idiagbonya. α-lpha blue blends classical into jazz, peppered with scat and vocalese. Vocalese is the art of setting words over an instrumental solo. In α-lpha blue 's 'Chicago to Brixton' recording, Doodlin' is based on the Sarah Vaughn rendition of the Horace Silver tune, John Coltrane's Resolution is inspired by Kurt Elling's lyric to the Love Supreme masterpiece, Classical repertoire's Music For a While and Gymnopedie No 1 are skeletons by which to add flesh and blood through exciting new harmonisations, arrangements and vocal enticements. |

2. "The Millennium Song" - www.globalsong.net- in 7 different languages,an acclaimed project to unite cultures around the world through song
